1. Actus Reus: This Latin term refers to the 'act' element in a crime. It involves a physical action or omission that is prohibited by law. For instance, in theft, the actus reus would be taking someone else's property without their consent.
2. Mens Rea: Another Latin term, this means 'guilty mind.' It signifies the intent or knowledge of wrongdoing. For example, in a crime like murder, both an actus reus (causing death) and mens rea (intention to kill) must be present for the crime to be committed.
The criminal justice system is responsible for enforcing criminal law. It consists of three main components: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Law enforcement agencies like police investigate crimes and make arrests, while the court system tries cases and imposes penalties. The corrections system manages offenders once they are convicted (FBI, 2021).
Understanding criminal law is essential for appreciating how society regulates behavior to maintain order and protect individuals. By prohibiting certain actions and punishing those who commit crimes, we create a safer environment for all.
